The Shiggar Fraggar Show! Vol. 2
Five years ago in Oakland, CA, journalist and radio DJ Billy Jam captured turntablism at its finest with his groundbreaking “Pirate Fucking Radio” series. Broadcast from Jam’s Hip-Hop Slam studio and syndicated on college-radio stations around the country, the series featured several up-and-coming DJs, chief among them the soon-to-be infamous Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Although the shows were hastily distributed on cassettes, The Shiggar Fraggar Show! is the first time these sessions have been made widely available. The compilations – Vol. 2 being the latest edition — feature the Skratch Piklz elevating scratching to astonishing new heights, as Q-Bert, DJ Disk, the mysterious Shiggar Fraggar (whose secret identity is a well-kept secret among skratch fanatics) and various other Piklz improvise jams with an array of hip-hop tracks, rare grooves and spoken-word records. If there was any proof that turntablism is the new jazz, this is it. The Shiggar Fraggar series comes closest to revealing how dynamic and creative the Invisibl Skratch Piklz were in their prime. It’s a shame they haven’t received more attention from critics and fans in the decades since their release.
